that depends on how interested the dog is in the external stimuli and also how interested in the kibble. the problem with high value treats for all training (not just special skills) is the higher calorie content and price limits training time. I think it's better to desensitize your dog to the outside and feed their main meals during training sessions (as kibble rewards) than rely on high value treats for everything. tbh if the dog is food motivated and still finds it hard to take a low value treats in a fairly neutral outdoor environment (eg not a dog park or busy intersection) then the dog is not getting enough outdoor TIME and may need some desensitization training. training a dog "tricks" when it's too overwhelmed to focus suggests it's not time to train tricks. it needs desensitisation to that environment first. just like you wouldn't train in the home the first day you've brought it home as a new pup. it's not settled in yet and it would be the wrong focus. the dog should be in its window of tolerance with low stress and arousal levels most if the time hopefully, but certainly during a training session. if its food motivated, but can't take kibble outside the house then it's not in its window of tolerance. it's overwhelmed. high value treats should ideally be used for skills that require more concentration because they're harder, not because the dog can't concentrate because it hasn't been given time to get used to your local outdoor area. - excercise the dog before outdoor training so it doesn't have to concentrate pre walk - let the dog smell and walk in the new training area first - in the first few days just spend an hour or so there getting used to the place - however long it takes for the dog to look calm - feed meals or half meals in this new environment in the first few days. this is comforting and tells the dog it's safe there. as well as taking focus off the environment - don't train on a full stomach then wonder why it doesn't want kibble - never start an outdoor training session the moment you get to a location without giving excercise and habituation first

Help. I do this and interrupt her midstream. Pick her up immediately take her outside and she does nothing. When she does this, I pick her up. Take her back inside. Put her in her crate. Wait a few minutes and then try again and still nothing. What else can I do?

Any tips for handling step 1 for a puppy that doesn't wear a collar? We use a harness and leash for walks or other outdoor activities but no collar due to the breed and size of the dog.

I do have to say that we had really well behaved dogs when I was a kid. But we had one that when you used a coarse tone with her or hurt her feelings, then left the house, you would come home to find an item of yours that she had chewed and left in the middle of the living room. We had 4 people at home, but she always chose an item of the person who had been coarse with her or hurt her feelings! It happened rarely, but I think she knew what she was doing!❤❤❤❤

I tried the line on my maltipoo and it didn’t work at all . I tried for several days. I got him h when he was 5 months old and he has been aggressive biting , snapping and barking and growling at me. I have tried pet corrector , water spray bottle even tried a news paper sound hitting it on my hand. I even tried turning my back to him and separating him from us . And nothing has worked. Im at my wits end. I have never had this problem with a dog before. 😞 I really need help with this puppers!!!!

I have a dog bred to hunt squirrels (40 pounds), and he nearly pulls me down by the leash when he sees a squirrel. I am a bit elderly and can't afford this strength much longer. He is a year & 1/2 year old. How can I stop this reactive behavior since we have many squirrels in this part of Florida?

I think her explanation is a little confusing. Dogs can’t feel guilt. A puppy might not understand (yet) that peeing inside is not allowed so when the owner gets mad hours later, they only react to the body language. Your dog knows what he did was not allowed. He doesn’t feel bad about it but he still doesn’t want to be confronted with your reaction. And if he ate (from) the trash, he’ll do it again and again because dogs learn by repeating things that they categorize as (self-/)rewarding and avoid things that don’t

My 2 Labradoodles, "2 & 18 mos" that I have now, so easy, my 8 shar-pei over the past several decades, no problem, this 14 week onld Cavalier king charles spaniel, its just not happening, does anyone have any suggestions? Hes sweet as honey but won't give a hint that he needs to go out.

We have bells on the door and train them to ring the bells when they want to go outside. At first, we started to ring the bell every time we took them out and rewarded them with a lot of praise whenever they rang the bell on their own. Some breeds are harder to train than other breeds. He will get there. We have an 8 1/2 yr old female Beagle, a 2 1/2 yr old male English Cocker Spaniel, and a 6 month old female Jack-Chi (Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix). We find that it is easiest to keep them all on the same schedule of eating, going outside, walking, playing, taking naps, and bedtime. I hope this helps. Good luck!
